Vortrag: Know your tools - I’m firing my laser! -

Event large

What do you think of when someone says the word “laser”? A light sabre perhaps? A laser pointer, a laser cutter?
In this talk I will introduce the important properties of laser light and give an overview of the current landscape of the world of lasers.

I will start from how lasers work and what makes this light so special. What is the difference between laser light and a that of a lightbulb? What’s the fuss about monochromaticity and this so-called “coherence”? The explanations provided will be thoroughly illustrated and the maths required will never go beyond sines and cosines.
After this introduction I will show an overview of what lasers are currently used for and what characteristics are used for these applications. In the world of research, the use of lasers now spans the full spectrum of natural sciences: biology, astronomy, particle acceleration, quantum physics, chemistry, are all using the laser as a primary tool. On the other side of the fences of university campuses lasers are also ubiquitous in the form of heavy-duty or fine machining tools, length measurement devices and telecommunication.
